The problem with most regional quiz apps
Search any app store for a country's name plus "quiz" and you will find a dozen results that are the same app fifteen times over: one English question set, machine-translated, with a flag on the icon. The questions read like they were written by someone who has never been there, because they were.
You notice it within three questions. The geography is all capitals and flags. The history stops at whatever has an English Wikipedia article. Nothing about food, nothing about slang, no explanation after the answer — because a translated question set has nothing to explain.
What to actually look for
Four things separate a real regional quiz from a reskin, and you can check all four before you install.
- Are the questions written in the local language, or translated into it? Translated questions read stiffly and get idioms wrong.
- Is there an explanation after each answer? Without one, a wrong answer teaches you nothing and the app is a scoreboard, not a game.
- Does it cover food, slang and daily culture, or only capitals and dates? The narrow ones ran out of material.
- Can you play against people you know? Solo trivia gets old; a room with fifteen friends does not.
How the MODEX apps are built
